Who we are

Tom is North Star Adventure’s founder and lead instructor with more than 13 years experience delivering high quality adventurous experiences. The Lake District is his adventure playground and he has a passion for guiding people to discover its natural secrets.

After a career in a corporate environment, he retrained to become a school teacher which he combined with leading expeditions all over the world, from the rainforests of Borneo to the snow-capped peaks of the Andes. He served for several years in the Lake District Mountain Rescue service, specialising as a swiftwater rescue technician and medic. Tom is a qualified mountain leader, rock climbing instructor, canoe coach and dinghy sailing instructor. He also delivers bushcraft and survival courses as well as forest-school learning experiences.

From time to time, our sessions will be run by one of our talented associates, who are all equally highly qualified and experienced with a passion for fun and adventure! Our river trips are run by Peter Carter or Ingrid Matthews, both highly experienced BCU Level 4 canoe instructors with intimate knowledge of the Tay and Spey rivers.
